Ghirelli secures third place in Budapest race of the Renault RS01 Trophy
For the 2015 season, Zele Racing has added the brand-new Renault Sport Trophy to its existing AutoGP programme. And last weekend, the Austrian team recorded its first podium finish at only the second Renault RS01 race event.
Vittorio Ghirelli finished converted a good qualifying performance into P3 in the Elite Driver race at the Hungaroring Sunday. “It’s great to get this podium finish, especially on a track I like. We were not quick enough to win today, but we are getting faster race by race”, the 2013 AutoGP champion said.
While, Ghirelli has moved up to fourth in the overall standings, his team mate Bas Schothorst had a hampered weekend. Following a poor qualifying, the Dutchman had to start from the back.
However, he worked his way through the field and was facing a point finish, when he was pushed into a spin overtaking Alan Hellmeister. “After bad qualifying, I enjoyed a good run and could have scored some points. But Alan slammed the door on me and made me spin. So no points this time”, Schothorst stated.
Understandably team boss Michael Zele had mixed feelings saying: “It’s a great result for Vittorio and the entire team. He did a great job, but we need to make our cars quicker. On the other hand, Bas did not get the chance to show his skill. Hence, there is lots of work ahead.”
The Renault Sport Trophy will continue in early September at the “Home of British Motorracing” in Silverstone.
