The Austrian outfit showed a strong display in its maiden Renault RS01 weekend
Zele Racing has long standing experience in formula racing and is currently dominating the F1 feeder series AutoGP. This season also marks the team’s maiden year in sportscar racing and the Austrians did really well at the season opener of the brand-new Renault RS01 Trophy in Spa Francorchamps.
Followed by 74,000 fans in the stands, Bas Schothorst/Philippe Haezebrouck stormed from P11 after technical problems in qualifying to P6. ProDriver Schothorst even set the fastest lap of the race.
On Sunday, Philippe Bourgois was on his way to a podium finish in the Prestige Drivers‘ sprint race, when Stefano Constantini (V8 Racing) shut the door on the Belgian and he spun. Bourgois eventually saved P6, while 2013 AutoGP champion Vittorio Ghirelli came fifth in the ProDriver Sprint.
“Not everything went as we had hoped for, but we were quick, which is most important. We were among the fastest cars in every race, so if we can get through qualifying without technical problems next time, we can be up there“, team boss Michael Zele said.
The RS01 Trophy continues on June 13/14 at the Hungaroring in Budapest.
